Locking (Campbellocking)

Locking is the first hip hop dance style that came into the world in the early 60s. It is often also called a funk style of dance (like popping) to distinguish it form other hip hop styles.

It is a funky style of dance where movements suddenly stop in locks (freezes) at various points. It is also often mixed with acrobatic moves. The creator of this style is Don Campbell.

Introduction

Many of the moves in locking were created by individual lockers who danced in their own style. These moves are still performed by lockers today.

Lockers can also dance in duos or groups and also can take part in locking battles or competitions at events like the Bboy Championships.

Locking Moves

The Lock
You must to know this move to begin with! This is the stopping of motion with the arms in a locked position in front of you.

Which-a-way
Fancy footwork with the legs going from side to side while going through various motions in the air.

Claps
Just like it sounds you clap your hands but it's usually done in a stlyish or elaborate manner with the arms spinning in different directions.

Scooby Doo
A locking step created by...you guessed it a locker called Scooby Doo.

Scoo Bot
A step where the legs shuffle from side to side, finished off with a clap.

Knee Drop
The dancer drops to their knees - with the knees facing inwards kind of like some people do when they need to pee.
